
The Subwoofer Was On. The Measurements Showed It Was Barely There.

An experienced two-channel listener with an enjoyable system, strong centre-image focus and unresolved bass and image-height questions had assembled DALI Rubicon 2 loudspeakers, BK XLS300-FF subwoofer, Sugden IA-4 integrated amplifier, WiiM Ultra processing and Chord Mojo 2 DAC. A persistent bass feature around 50–55 Hz remained distracting, while the BK subwoofer seemed to contribute very little. Image height was also limited despite otherwise strong imaging.
The System and The Challenge
Context: An experienced two-channel listener with an enjoyable system, strong centre-image focus and unresolved bass and image-height questions

Symptoms: A persistent bass feature around 50–55 Hz remained distracting, while the BK subwoofer seemed to contribute very little. Image height was also limited despite otherwise strong imaging.
Room Constraints
- The current layout and centre-image focus were worth preserving
- The WiiM cut around 50 Hz was reported to tighten the bass and was not removed casually
- The original REW traces did not establish whether room interaction, placement, phase, crossover, gain, processing or signal path was responsible
- Tweeter height and seated ear height were already close, so speaker-height alteration was not justified as the first move
- Only one variable could change if the retest was to establish cause and effect


The Starting Point

AudioBro deliberately protected what was already working. The centre image was reported as solid, tweeter height and seated ear height were closely aligned, and the existing WiiM filter was subjectively useful. Speaker position, listening position and processing therefore stayed fixed while the subwoofer contribution question was isolated.
Investigation & Modelling
AudioBro separated three questions that could easily have been confused: whether the 50 Hz behaviour was caused by the subwoofer, whether the BK was contributing meaningfully at all, and whether the separate image-height concern justified changing speaker height. The original BK Off / BK On measurements were almost identical across most of the relevant range, establishing that meaningful subwoofer contribution had to be verified before placement, crossover, phase or EQ should be optimised. A rear-panel photograph then showed that the high-level input was in use, the low-level inputs were unused and HI LEVEL GAIN was the active control. Its near-minimum position explained the small original separation without inventing a room or hardware fault.

One Controlled Change
The existing setup became the reference. AudioBro asked for one reversible change only: increase HI LEVEL GAIN to approximately 9–10 o’clock, then repeat the same BK Off / BK On measurement.
- Mark and photograph the original HI LEVEL GAIN position
- Leave loudspeaker and listening positions unchanged
- Leave BK phase, frequency and filter controls unchanged
- Leave WiiM PEQ and playback route unchanged
- Increase only HI LEVEL GAIN to approximately 9–10 o’clock
- Repeat the same BK Off / BK On REW comparison

The controlled retest showed clear separation between BK Off and BK On in the deep bass, verifying that the active high-level gain change produced materially greater subwoofer contribution. The customer then reported that the system sounded much more enjoyable with the sub in play.
Implemented, measurement-verified for increased BK contribution and customer-confirmed by listening. Wider optimisation remains open.
Verified Result and Continuing Investigation
- Use the successful high-level gain setting as the new working reference
- Refine final gain without changing another integration variable at the same time
- Assess frequency control and phase as separate controlled comparisons
- Reassess the existing WiiM 50 Hz cut with the BK now contributing meaningfully
- Continue the separate image-height investigation while protecting the centre image

The first setup defect has been identified and its correction verified. Final gain, crossover, phase, the 50 Hz feature and the image-height question remain continuing work.
Planned continuation—not completed optimisation. Each remaining variable will be assessed separately.
What the Retest Verified
The controlled retest verifies that increasing the active high-level gain materially increased the BK subwoofer’s deep-bass contribution. The customer separately reported that the system sounded much more enjoyable. The verification is deliberately bounded: final gain, crossover, phase and the 50 Hz region remain open; the image-height question remains separate and is not claimed solved.
Why This Case Matters
This case was not valuable because turning a gain control is technically difficult. It was valuable because the correct problem had to be identified before anything should change. The original measurement established what was happening but not why. Physical equipment evidence then identified the active input and relevant control. One variable changed, the same comparison was repeated, and the result was verified by both REW and the customer’s listening experience. AudioBro preserved what already worked and left the remaining questions open rather than hiding them behind a broad success claim.

Customer Outcome
After increasing only the active HI LEVEL GAIN control and repeating the same BK Off / BK On comparison, the new REW traces showed clear additional deep-bass contribution from the subwoofer. The customer then reported that the system sounded much more enjoyable with the sub in play. This verifies the setup diagnosis and the effect of the controlled intervention; it does not establish that gain, crossover, phase, the 50 Hz region or the wider room response are fully optimised.
The system sounds much more enjoyable now the sub is in play! Looking forward to your further input very much indeed. This is already money well spent.

Measurement verification is bounded to the controlled BK high-level gain intervention. The retest demonstrates increased deep-bass contribution from the subwoofer, while the customer independently reported a more enjoyable result. It does not prove complete room optimisation, final gain, crossover or phase, resolution of the 50 Hz feature, or resolution of the image-height question.
